This is my first post on the site and I thought I'd start by laying down the foundation for Grower to Grower. I want to put together a place where professional greenhouse growers can discuss problems, solutions and or other topics in our industry and the world of floriculture. I plan to post when I can (hopefully alot) about what I'm doing in the greenhouse. I'm a head grower for a medium sized wholesale operation in the Midwest. We are propagators as well as finished growers and fortunately we have been able to stay away from the Box Stores so far.
That's all I have for an intro so I'll talk a bit about plants. It's pretty busy for us but not like May. We have plenty of flats, hanging baskets, and combos left. If we get lucky the heat will stay away for a few more weeks and sales can stay strong through June. I'm starting to take left over product like 4" vegetative annuals or bigger flats and putting together ready-made combos. This is a great way to move product that you may be long on in the greenhouse. Of coarse it takes some labor to do but if you can pot up 100 combos and put them right on a cart to ship out to your customer it's worth doing. On top of all the season-extender stuff, it's time for mums and we'll be sticking poinsettias in a few weeks. I'll talk more about mums and poinsettias in the next few days/weeks.
For now I'm out.
